Introduction to a Story Addict

So. The name’s Jenna.

I write young adult speculative fiction, obsess over all things superhero (the X-Men will always be the best, even if they wound up with the cinematic short stick), and lament the deaths of my favorite characters. My entire material bucket list consists of a 1967 Chevy Impala, and if a word exists, there’s a 97% chance I’ve mispronounced it at least twice.

I’m a Professional Writing major and a Film & Media Studies minor—which is fitting, I guess, since for as long as I can remember, stories have been the fiery star my life revolves around.

My favorite television show—and the best story I’ve ever found, period; the story arc for seasons one through five is genuinely a thing of glory—is Supernatural. The story of two codependent brothers travelling around the continental United States “hunting things, saving people,” it’s grown from a tiny, low-budget show that almost got cancelled several times, into the longest-running science fiction TV series in the U.S. (Season 12 starts airing later this fall.) In case it isn’t obvious, I could discuss Supernatural until pretty much the end of time. Since life is a tragedy and I don’t have access to a T.A.R.D.I.S., though, I’ll move on to add that some of my other favorite shows include Veronica Mars, Doctor Who, Sherlock, The X-Files, Twin Peaks, and the DCAU.

As far as books go, Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle will pretty much always own my soul; it mixes Welsh mythology with the most compelling character work I’ve ever been lucky enough to come across, and is one of those series that gets better each time you read it. Holly Black’s Curse Workers trilogy is my other all-time favorite—it’s the noir-influenced story of Cassel Sharpe, a teenage conman who’s just trying to defy his own nature and go straight, but who keeps getting dragged back into the life by his mob-connected family. Pretty great stuff.

  1. FINALLY. Someone else who has seen/likes Twin Peaks. I'm in the process of watching through the series for the second time right now, because I've finally gotten someone I know to watch it. I love the intense quirkiness and oddities of the show. My roommate is a Film and Media Studies major and we watched through all of the "backwards" scenes so many times trying to learn how to speak backwards like the cast.

I love the layout of your blog!

    1. Ah, that's so cool! Twin Peaks fans are ridiculously hard to find. Maybe that'll change when season 3 comes out (fingers crossed on the entire season 3 front, actually. Here's hoping it's worth it). I love the idea of watching all the Red Room scenes to try to work out how to backwards-speak, too.

      Thanks!

  2. Hey I’m a Film and Media studies Major! What classes are you taking this semester? Any who I love supernatural! My roommate and I always binge watch that show when the newer season comes out on Netflix. And don’t get me started on Doctor who! I was on the fence for a while for starting that show just because of how popular it is but now I’m in love with it! I’ve tried to get my roommate into it but she said that she thinks it’s dumb. I know, crazy right! I’m guessing since you’re a professional writing major you going to have a lot of fun in this class! Can’t wait to read all your posts this semester!

    1. I actually finished all my FMS and major classes early, and now I'm doubling back around to pick up the basics I still haven't taken. Kind of backwards, I know. But yeah, Supernatural's the best! Doctor Who is great, too--I haven't watched in forever and need to catch up on Capaldi. I can totally see how someone might go into it with reservations, though. The first half of the revived first season was pretty rough, but it's all about sticking it out till the good stuff, haha. Same to you!

  3. So, it looks like you are only PW major in the class this semester, Jenna... alas! But I hope it can be a really fun writing laboratory for you, a chance to do experiments, explore new story sources, and let your Muse learn some new tricks that are different from what you might be doing in your major classes! If you want to use it as a chance to do fan fiction, Supernatural and Doctor Who have fueled some great projects in the past (those are both OMNIVOROUS shows, able to absorb and transform any motif from traditional mythology and legend)... sending the Winchester Brothers to Wales, for example, if you are interested in Welsh storytelling (sheer awesomeness: Freebookapalooza-Wales)... and infinite other possibilities. I am curious to see what you will make of it all. Enjoy!

    1. I'm definitely loving it so far. The weekly stories are insanely fun, and I love seeing what different people do with similar prompts. That's a great idea about Supernatural! One of my favourite things about the show is that ability, but I'd never thought about the similarities between that and Doctor Who before.

  4. Jenna,

First, I really like the name of your blog. I'd never heard of Quiddity before, and I think it's very creative. I also agree that X-Men got the short end of the film stick, what happened to that franchise was not fair to all of it's fans. Thanks for sharing, good luck with your other classes this semester.

    1. Thanks! Very true--the story of the X-Men movies is pretty much nothing short of tragic. Hopefully some of the upcoming mutant TV shows will be better; some of them actually look pretty good.

  5. Hey Jenna, thank you for making me look up the definition of quiddity, for I have now learned a new word. In addition to that, I've now learned a bit about you, and I think you seem like a pretty cool person. Do you want to be a sci-fi novelist when you graduate? My dad is also a pretty big fan of Supernatural, and from what I've seen of it, it seems pretty good! I look forward to reading your stuff this semester!

    1. Yeah, I'd love to write some soft sci-fi at some point--if something falls under fantasy, sci-fi, supernatural/paranormal, or a little bit of horror, I'm definitely game. Sounds like your dad has pretty good taste in TV, haha; I forced my dad to watch some Supernatural, and now he's a fan as well. Looking forward to checking out your stories too!

  6. Hi! So, I immediately looked up the word quiddity, and hope to now introduce it (probably pronounced incorrectly) to my everyday vocabulary. Thank you!
Goodness gracious, you spoke so compellingly about so many things that I haven’t yet experienced that my absurdly large reading list is being stretched even further. Raven Cycle sounds delightful, but we’re in college and, who are we kidding, reading for pleasure is a luxury we often don’t have time for, so it will just haunt the back of my mind. Dang it.
In other news, I'm looking forward to your writing with great anticipation. It already seems likely to be delightful!:)

    1. Ha, glad to hear it! I feel like it's one of those words that doesn't even look like it should be real, which is kind of fun. And the lack of reading time is brutal, isn't it? I've had to add so many books to the post-school reading pile, I'm not really sure where I'll start once I get the chance.

And thanks so much--that's quite kind of you to say. Looking forward to reading some of your stuff too!

  7. Jenna, I love the name of your blog. The word "quiddity" has such a vast but deep meaning. Your writing flows very well and I love your passion for Supernatural! I love watching Netflix and I am constantly obsessing over another show. The picture caught my eye because I have always thought antique cars were priceless because its something you will never be able to get again. Bucket lists are a cool thing because they give you something really big to hope for.

    1. Thanks very much! I'm the same way--always cycling through a rotation of new obsessions, so Netflix is both my best friend and my mortal enemy, ha. Very good point about antique cars, too; I wouldn't have thought to put it that way, but it's a huge part of the appeal.

  8. Hi Jenna,

We are both writers! I, however, am a journalism major rather than Professional Writing. I work in the Gaylord Advising office though so I know a lot about PW! I started out minoring in Film & Media Studies but ended up switching it to International Studies because I wanted to learn more about different parts of the world. Anyways, I’m glad I got to read a little bit about you and I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future!

    1. Ah, always cool to meet another Gaylord student! I imagine this class would be especially fun for a journalism major, to get the chance to stretch a different set of writing muscles. International Studies sounds like it would be a really interesting minor, too. The same to you!

  9. Jenna, it's nice to meet you. I was drawn to your bio immediately by the title and the good looking car. It's neat to see your creativity and I look forward to receiving tips on my writing from you. In addition, I've never watched the series supernatural but I bet you'd get along great with my friend sara who does! Thanks for sharing and I look forward to more of your posts.

  11. Hey Jenna!

You’re definitely in the right class being a writing major! That’s awesome, and I can’t wait to read your stories!

I also enjoy superheroes, and I’m hoping to one day start reading more comic books. (btw I haven’t actually seen the X-Men, crazy I know!)

I’ve also never watched Supernatural, but I had a roommate who loved it as well! I’ll definitely have to look into it!

It was nice meeting you, and I hope you get your Impala one day!

  12. Hey, Jenna!

I'm so excited that you love to write so much! I'm really excited to read your stuff this semester.

My boyfriend is OBSESSED with Supernatural and watches it all the time. Maybe I should take his advice and check it out.

I love books of all kinds. I'm currently reading 'Complications' by Atul Gwande. It's kind of a recount of things from a surgeon's perspective. I'm pre-med, but I think anyone could appreciate his work!

    Nice to meet you!!

  13. Hello Jena, It is nice to meet you. I really like the way you have your blog organized. The background photo makes the whole page tie together nicely. From your introduction I can tell I am going to enjoy your writing style. I am a political science major. We get to do a lot of writing, but that doesn't mean it is developed for creative writing. I have watched Super Natural and X files a few ties, but I don't get into television series that often. I like series, I just don't have enough time to keep up with them. It is like reading a book and never getting to read the conclusion. I love to watch movies. I can invest two hours and feel complete. I look forward to reading more of your writing throughout the semester.

  14. Hi Jenna! First of all, wow. Your blog is really cool! Very eye catching. I already love your style of writing and can't wait to read more of your stories. I love watching the X-Files when I have time! Good luck with your future endeavors and with finishing school!

  15. Hi Jenna! I completely agree about the X-Men they are my favorite superheroes and they had such great potential with movies. I have to say I like the precursor movies a lot though. I like seeing Magneto and Professor Xavier when they were younger and what led them to be who they were. It doesn’t hurt that they are incredibly easy to look at. I digress though… I’m going to say that I’m incredibly jealous of your major in writing. I was an English major with deplorable grammar skills prior to transferring. Since, OU doesn’t have an online degree in writing, I had to choose something that is very heavy into essay’s and etc., don’t get me wrong I love my major. It’s just not what I originally sought. I suppose there are different plans for me! I have only seen the first half of Supernatural and told myself I would always go back and watch it more, but I keep putting it off. I have tendency to put off books and shows I know I’m going to love…it’s weird. Oh, boy I have written a lot I suppose I should wrap this up. I could discuss for days about your introduction because you’re interested in a lot of the same things I’m!
P.S. Re-watching X-Files slowly and I loveee me some VM and DW!

  16. This class is really perfect for you! I’m not a big TV watcher but I love reading so I’ll definitely keep those books in mind! I’m not sure if you have heard of the Outlander series but that is what I’m reading right now. I love it so much! My favorite show is Game of Thrones and it is one of two shows that I have watched every single episode of. It really keeps you on your toes and you never would expect what happens next! Hope you have a great semester and that you someday drive that Impala!

  17. Hi, Jenna!

I like lament the deaths of my favorite characters too. Actually, any good character’s death is sad. When they die, I feel like I have a hole in my heart temporarily, and it feels empty.

I was surprised to read that Supernatural almost got cancelled a few times. The books and shows you mentioned sound good. I will have to check a few of them out.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Haha I find it so funny that you specify seasons 1-5 of supernatural. I absolutely adore those seasons but I couldn't be more tired of what the show's become in later years. I suppose 6-8 were okay but nothing will beat the original story arc. Your major and minor are pretty dang cool and it's no wonder your writing is so great with credentials like that! I'm sure you're enjoying it all very much or at least I hope so. Love reading your work!

  19. Hi Jenna! One of my favorite things is reading stories/biographies by people who can really write, and do so creatively. This is how I felt about your introduction. I can tell you are good at your major and will go far one day. I am all caught up on my most recent Netflix addiction, so maybe I will check out Supernatural next! I look forward to reading your stories!
